The mountains as a theatre of war. The cold. Hunger. Snow, ice avalanches and landslides. The brutality of the elements. Nature as the enemy’s best ally – on both sides. Uniquely beautiful nature, incomparable views, but more merciless than any enemy attacks. This is the theme of the new annual special exhibition in the Messner Mountain Museum. The 1915–1918 war up in the highest peaks of South Tyrol, the Ortler range, where the inhuman conditions cost more lives than enemy fire.

Just a small selection of pipes reflect in the light in the display window. A large workbench in the background, in front of which is a glass display case. The name Bertram Safferling is emblazoned on the glass door. Asubtle hint of pipe tobacco hangs in the air. Bertram Safferling is wearing a robust leather apron and holding a still-warm pipe in his hand. He’s one of the last masters to carry on this craft, one which is in danger of dying out. He actually studied industrial design but has been making pipes for nearly 30 years.
