The mountains as a theatre of war. The cold. Hunger. Snow, ice avalanches and landslides. The brutality of the elements. Nature as the enemy’s best ally – on both sides. Uniquely beautiful nature, incomparable views, but more merciless than any enemy attacks. This is the theme of the new annual special exhibition in the Messner Mountain Museum. The 1915–1918 war up in the highest peaks of South Tyrol, the Ortler range, where the inhuman conditions cost more lives than enemy fire.
