Strolling around town, one is amazed how versatile Bolzano is, a fusion of the traditional with the avantgarde. Boutiques, bars and all manner of shops enliven the streets and squares. One such shop dedicated to maintaining tradition is Windegger the Butcher’s, a family business in the Mustergasse going back to 1901, just a stone’s throw from the Waltherplatz. Fresh meat, but also sausages, cold meats and the local speciality, speck – all made and prepared according to recipes handed down from generation to generation.

Marianne and Agostino Prousch opened their Restaurant Anita in the Obstmarkt back in 1963, focusing on traditional food and friendly service. Five children, including Anita and Aldina, who have both grown up in the business and who run the restaurant today. Back then there were hardly any other restaurants in the square, and twice as many fruit and vegetable stalls as there are today. They are constantly re-inventing new variations of local cuisine, which, accompanied by their select wines, make Anita a favourite meeting place for locals and an insider’s tip for visitors.
