It’s certainly not a giant. Rather, it’s stocky and thick. Eleven metres in diameter. The bark is gnarled and fissured. The main trunk hasn’t sprouted leaves for many years, but it is surrounded by vigorous younger trunks reaching up to the sky. Over a thousand years old it is supposed to be, this chestnut tree in the centre of Karneid. An impressive natural monument.

When the days become shorter, the Bolzano valley basin gets a very particular light at dawn and at dusk. The silhouettes become sharper and the air clearer, sometimes even sharp, The hills around the town where the Lagrein and the St Magdalener grapes ripen, change their colours. From green to yellow, to ochre, to orange, red and rusty brown. It’s as if the vineyards lighten up from within, in order to show off their beauty before the coming winter.
