Latemarium - the new summeradventure area at the foot of thelegendary Latemar mountain rangenear Obereggen in the Eggentalvalley, barely half an hour’s drivefrom Bolzano. A high-mountain experience for non-hikers? A 360° panorama? An instructive mountain adventure for young and old, even with a sturdy pushchair? Or a jumping-off point for an exciting hike? Whatever you are looking for, the answer is Latemarium. This can easily be reached in a matter of minutes via the Oberholz lift in the Obereggen valley station. No sooner have you got off the lift than you set out. A display map indicates the many varied possibilities, the themed trails are of varying length, from short to long, they are well-laid out and they sensitively blend into the majestic landscape, directly below the sheer rock faces of the jagged Latemar peaks. A guided family hike is offered every Wednesday starting at 10.00am at the valley station (advance booking required). The adventure trails have been laid out according to the most up-to-date educational concepts, giving insights into the flora and fauna, the geology and the history of this fascinating range, allowing you to really experience the high mountains. Listen to the wooden chimes, marvel at the ammonite fossils, try out a tree-telephone, smell the alpine flowers, follow the traces of the dragons, get to know the mountain animals and much else besides. “Mum, what was that whistling?” Wander through ancient forests to the accompaniment of the playful marmots, cross the high-alpine pastures and scree slopes to stop off at mountain huts offering all manner of regional specialities (and children’s menus). Latemarium 360 is the name given to the wooden viewing platform at an altitude of 2200 metres, shaped like an ammonite, which gives a breathtaking panoramic view of the most important peaks of the central Alps, the highest being the mighty Ortler at 3904 metres. With ideal weather conditions, even distant snow and ice-covered peaks 80 km away like the Weisskugel (3740 m) can be made out. And, with suitable equipment, of course, whoever wants to scale the nearby peaks can try the Latemar traverse starting from here.
