Two dates for wine-lovers to remember: 22nd July - St Magdalener parish fair and 10th August - Lorenzi Night. Bolzano is the essence of a wine town. Vineyards of the vintners’ cooperative and of more than 20 private wineries extend from right in the centre to all around the town. With its 510 hectares of vineyards, Bolzano has around 10% of South Tyrol’s total wine-growing area. The town is especially proud of its two autochthonous or local wines: Sankt Magdalener and Lagrein.

A design competition to design a bathroom for a biodynamic vintner? What does that have to do with Bolzano? Little, at first sight. But only at first sight. Bolzano is very much a wine-town and the vintners hereabouts don’t only produce qualitatively-outstanding wines, above all the local varieties Lagrein and Sankt Magdalener, but they produce wines according to state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly, biodynamic methods. So that is one of the connections.

“This is Fischbänke: open-air emotion place” or “The concept is that you wait, not that I have to rush around”. These signs give a hint of the philosophy of this special place created by ‘Cobo’, alias Rino Zullo, globetrotter, philosopher and artist. His signs with wise sayings in many languages are hung up everywhere around the ancient marble slabs of what used to be the fish market, now serving as a kind of counter under the open air, protected from the sun and the occasional shower by huge umbrellas.
